The National Television Award for Best Serial Drama in 2021 has gone to Coronation Street.

EastEnders, Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks competed against the ITV soap.

The prize was presented on behalf of the cast by Sally Carman, who plays Abi Franklin.

“Oh my gosh, thank you so much for voting for us; it really, truly means everything,” she added.

“As you all know, the past year has been really challenging with lockdown, and we’ve worked extremely hard in every department.” Everyone involved in the production: the performers, the staff, the make-up department, and everyone else. Coronation Street is a true collaborative effort.”

“I enjoy my job,” she added, “and not only do we all work well together, but I also get to call these folks my friends.”

“Thank you very much on behalf of everyone at Coronation Street; this means the world to us.” Thank you very much!”

Corrie had a good night, as it celebrated some other major victories.

Jude Riordan was named Best Newcomer, making him the youngest actor to ever win an NTA.

When the 10-year-old couldn’t reach the microphone, host Joel Dommett had to pull him up.

For her performance as Nina Lucas, Mollie Gallagher won an award for Best Serial Performance.

She began to cry and added, “I’m getting emotional.” “I just want to dedicate this award to everyone who feels like they don’t belong or don’t fit the mould. You’re incredible! Yes, you are.”

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the show has had to cope with a multitude of filming limitations, and has devised ingenious techniques to circumvent social distancing.

For kissing sequences or when characters have held hands, the performers’ real-life spouses are sometimes used as stand-ins.
