EMMERDALE fan-favourite couple Charity Dingle and Vanessa Woodfield have had a fair share of ups and downs in recent months, as evil Pierce Harris recently abducted the latter. Fortunately, she was found to be safe from his reach as Vanessa celebrated her birthday last night, but something caught the viewer's attention.

Emmerdale fans have seen Vanessa Woodfield (played by Michelle Hardwick) go through a horrific ordeal for her, and her rival Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather) has taken young son Jonny hostage. He managed to escape and celebrated her birthday yesterday as fans were persuaded that her fiancé Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) was sworn as her girlfriend appeared disappointed by the gift he gave her.

Charity and Vanessa had a wild couple of months in the Dales after the wedding of the pair, but the latter was left at the altar jilted.

This happened around the time of the murder of Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough), where Charity and her son Ryan (James Moore) appeared like they were in the picture.

She was furious at Graham's treatment of her son when she went to threaten him with some guilty believers.

However, it soon emerged that it was, in fact, Pierce who murdered the ill-fated businessman as he plotted his vengeance for his ex-wife Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) to get to those nearest.

Viewers have recently seen Vanessa diagnosed stage three cancer of the colon, leaving her and Charity shaken as they attempt to absorb the news.

They hit another landmark yesterday when they celebrated Vanessa's birthday as the couple tried to get things back on track.

Charity pulled out all the stops in a bid to take her mind off things and took a pricey tablet to her husband.
Talking to Va as Charity

She replied to Vanessa: "When you said no birthday party, I listened to you. 'Even though I took the morning off and sucked it up, you needed to work till lunchtime,' Charity told her. She was shocked by her sister Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh), who is still in that dark about Vanessa's leukemia when she announced her family gift.

In December she booked a mini-break for the couple to Heidelberg because Vanessa was obviously concerned that she wouldn't be well enough to attend.

The trip was in memory of their late father, Frank Clayton (Michael Praed), who had wanted to go there before he died last year, Tracey explained.

Later the pair was left with further doubts when Vanessa was given a date for her upcoming operation.

With operation approaching Vanessa, how long will she decide to keep the news to herself?

Should Vanessa be okay or will the couple get more bad news in store if the treatment fails?
